The most famous thing about Sardinas, arguably the Philippines' most-followed local cat, is that she does absolutely nothing on command. This is, her human insists, the entire brand.
"People keep asking for tricks," laughs Jamie Villareal, 29, the Makati-based graphic designer behind the account. "Sardinas does not do tricks. Sardinas does judgment. Apparently that's what 800,000 people wanted."
The origin story is pure Manila: a rainy June evening in 2023, a work deadline, and a gray tabby kitten yelling from behind the office parking lot's row of motorcycles. Villareal posted the rescue as a joke — 'found this angry dumpling, I guess she lives with me now' — and the follow-up video of Sardinas claiming the office ergonomic chair did numbers overnight.
What grew from there mirrors the larger explosion of Filipino cat content, a scene where creators have built six-figure followings on the specific comedy of cats who act like tired aunties. Villareal's formula is disciplined: one post a day, always captioned in a casual, bilingual style, never forcing the cat. "The moment it stresses her, there's no content that day. Non-negotiable. She's a cat, not an employee."
That line has made Villareal something of a quiet conscience in the local petfluencer scene, using brand-deal income to fund a monthly feeding-and-TNR round for the community cats of three Makati neighborhoods — Sardinas' former colleagues, as the captions put it. Followers have funded dozens of spay/neuter slots through the account's donation drives.
The next chapter is offline: Villareal has started appearing at creator meetups and cat care panels, including mall events where fans line up less for the human than for the carrier with the mesh window and the unimpressed face behind it.
Any advice for the thousands of would-be catfluencers filming their own rescue cats tonight? "Adopt the cat first, love the cat completely, post whatever happens. The ones who try too hard, the internet notices right away. The unbothered ones win." Sardinas, asked for comment, went to sleep.
